



Romeo Bergeron

Romeo Bergeron began competing in the sport in New England in the 1920s, affiliated with Cercle LaCordaire Athletic Association, Woonsocket, RI. He was 154 Lbs. Class Champion for New England in 1927 and ’28. After 1932 he turned his attention to coaching and promoting Weightlifting. In 1935 his lifters captured the National Junior Championships Team Title. He brought the 1938 AAU Senior National Championships to Woonsocket. Romeo also founded the Canadian Athletic Club back in those days. He served as AAU New England WL Chairman 1935-’45. Eventually he would serve in every administrative position in the sport in our region. Having become an IWF Category 1 International Referee, Bergeron officiated at five World Championships, including the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. In the early 1970s he received a medal from the IWF for 50 Years of Service. In his later years Romeo Bergeron trained lifters at the Attleboro, Massachusetts YMCA.
