Nick was a very competitive lifter for over a decade as a New Englander. In July 1972, in his first official WL competition, he won Silver Medal in National Teenage Championships in the then-existing 52 Kilo Class. Later that year he won same class in New England Junior Olympics. In 1973 he won Silver in both Teenage Pan-American and Senior US National Championships, also as 52 Kilo lifter. He was New England Champion that year, plus following year (now in 56 Kilo Class) and again in 1979 (67.5 Kilo Class). In 1974 he also took 2nd place at 52 Kilos in US Senior National Championships. Nick was Bronze Medalist in 60 Kilo Class at 1976 US Senior Nationals. Also that year he placed 13th at World Junior Championships, 60 Kilos Class. In September 1979 (Eastern States Open, Albany, NY) Nick Vernucci set US National Records for 67.5 Kilos Class: 130 kilos in Snatch and 290 kilos Total. As late as 1983 he ranked third in US as 67.5 Kilos lifter. Nick remained New England’s top 67.5 Kilos lifter throughout the 1980s. As of May 2013 he still holds following New England Records: all Junior Records for 56 Kilos Class plus all the Senior Records in 56, 62, 69 and 77 Kilos Bodyweight Classes!
