James W. Webster

BORN: 1898

 

James W. Webster was born in Great Britain, emigrated to Rhode Island in 1916. He established a number of weightlifting clubs in the area during the ensuing two decades. Webster also organized numerous competitions and worked to train a new generation of leaders in our sport in New England. He became a National Referee in the American Continental Weight Lifting Association (ACWLA), which preceded the involvement of the AAU in the sport. For a time he was an accomplished competitor in 126 Lbs. Weight Class despite putting so much time and energy into “behind the scenes” work.
